Paid Charons Fare : Mourn (EP)

Band name: Paid Charons Fare

Now, this is nice: very much so, in fact. Not 'nice', in the sense of Tennyson's jolly romps, like "And then my heart with pleasure fills/ And dances with the daffodils": think more along the lines of Byron's gloomy lament "And thou art dead, as young and fair/As aught of mortal birth", and take 'nice' to mean 'exquisitely dismal'. That's if any such qualification is needed after a glance at the graveyard angel statue of the cover - a monument, watching over ranks of crumbling headstones, with timeless and forlorn serenity. Nothing new in that, obviously: it's pretty much a certainty that

GOWLOn : he talked to me like I was real

Band name: GOWLOn

Doom is a strange beast to properly define these days, stretching, as it does, between the far distant shores of glacier-slow total noise and gallopingly anthemic riff festivals. Even attempting to view Extreme and Trad styles as different beasts entirely doesn't narrow it down much: within both camps lie enough variety to make the genre boundaries more of an abstract attitude than a set of clear musical attributes. Sometimes, I see it most simply as an absence of any other, more rigid, label - the poor, dispossessed bastard musical children of disparate parents, united only by a stubbornly

R.E.T. : Coming Soon...

R.E.T. : Coming Soon...

Band name: R.E.T.

Reaction Extasy Trance are a long-running Czech ensemble playing accessible, professionally polished Gothic Metal, weaving an appealingly upbeat sound that draws influence from bands like Tiamat and Theatre of Tragedy. In their third decade of activity, R.E.T. have modernized a bit from their '90s roots while still offering the requisite sense of musical darkness. Currently an eight-piece, R.E.T.'s new album (and sixth overall), 'Coming Soon...', is a vocal showcase given solid support by a very capable band. Lead-off track 'Dialog' opens softly, with a gorgeous and patient synthesizer intro

Opium Warlords : Taste My Sword Of Understanding

Opium Warlords : Taste My Sword Of Understanding

Band name: Opium Warlords

Opium Warlords is the brainchild of Sami Albert Hynninen, AKA Albert Witchfinder, former bass player and vocalist for the seminal Finnish Traditional Doom metal band Reverend Bizarre. This latest effort from the musical manufacturing plant of Mr. Hynninen sees a continuation to the legacy of Reverend Bizarre in parts. The other, non-traditional-doom moments oscillate between the peculiar, the shamanic and the avant-garde. In general, this is Traditional Doom metal done pretty well, flirting with Drone fillers and Stoner/bluesy sections which you may not care for. The album also takes the very

Gorilla Monsoon : Firegod - Feeding The Beast

Band name: Gorilla Monsoon

Ever plugged a guitar in and starting jamming? Something appears that sounds pretty cool, and you keep it going before finally imagining those drums kicking in when the band next get together - nice one. Suddenly though, seemingly out of nowhere, you've got Pepper Keenan ringing in your ears and you realise rather forlornly that you've been playing something very close to 'Albatross' by COC. If only... You won't have been the first to quite innocently and subliminally conjure up other peoples riffs and you certainly won't be the last. Gorilla Monsoon definitely have, and they've put most of

Deveikuth : VII-π-III

Band name: Deveikuth

One of the more delightful things about being here is the variety of music which lands in my inbox every week: hugely popular (by Doom standards, at least) bands, rubbing shoulders with completely unknown names, spanning every part of the spectrum (and beyond, even if, sadly, there's often no time to spare for further exploration of these latter). Sure, plenty of them fall into some sort of 'sounds like...' or 'heard it all before...', or drop into the abyss of the unexceptional, but it's still heartening how many bands strive to produce something new, worthwhile and individual by rearranging
