Melechesh : As Jerusalem Burns... Al'Intisar

Band name: Melechesh

The album starts off with an intro, which like many other intros was completely unnecessary, something that didn’t quite make my hopes go up through the ceiling. Then the first real song starts, “Sultan of Mischief”, which almost made me crap my pants. With its fierce anger and rawness, it was like a pair of Dr. Martens boots shoved right up in the family jewels. One could also put it this way: It was fucking stunning. Black metal with a touch of Middle-Eastern traditional music was something I had never heard before, and this made me realize how much I had actually missed it. Almost every

Melechesh : Djinn

Band name: Melechesh

This is a solid effort from the first Palestinian band I have ever heard. While I do agree that a lot of bands have used a lot of the oriental melodies to an extreme, Melechesh is a hell of a lot better at doing this than most, probably because they are from a culture where this is imbedded in their minds from an early age. Also, they don't just use the melodies. Instead, they base their riffs and drum beats around them, which makes Melechesh quite original. There a lot more agressive than most "ethnic" band, as well. "Genies, Sorcerors and Mesopotamian Nights" is a great way to start the

Melechesh : Sphynx

This last year was an especially bad one for my interest in new metal bands, as I have mainly been focusing on getting older releases. All the blast attack/grind, and "core" type stuff has been really pissing me off, because when I hear metal, I want riffs and memorable songs, not just buzz drive overkill blur shit. As with Akercocke's Choronzon, Melechesh's Sphynx is restoring my faith in the new generation of metal. This is such a masterpiece that I am almost at a loss for words. Read my review of their previous album, Djinn, for a more complete description of their style, because Sphynx

Melechesh : Emissaries

Band name: Melechesh

This album has got to be one of the best albums of 2006 and the best so far released by the band. It is a perfect blend of the folky Middle Eastern black metal sound of their Djinn album and the thrashy black metal of the Sphinx album. While in most cases good production tends to harm the quallity of a Black Metal album in this case it actually enhances it; Ashmedi's raspy vocals are clearer than ever and really stand out on the album and the folky Middle Eastern riffis are of exellent clarity as well. Ashmedi's raspy vocals are clear and audiable unlike the Djinn album where you could

Melechesh : The Epigenesis

Band name: Melechesh

"Mesopotamian" black metal band Melechesh blew a lot of minds with 2006's Emissaries, so it's no wonder its follow-up The Epigenesis has been so widely anticipated after a four year wait. The music is clearly the Israeli expats' unique brand of thrashy, Middle Eastern-inspired black metal from the get-go. Every single track has riffs inspired by the unusual combination, and it's still just as compelling as ever. There's also a great deal of traditional instrumentation, including two instrumentals which are all-traditional and several places where it's worked into metal songs. It's also

Coming off the back of the huge critical acclaim lauded on "The Epigenesis" one might have thought that Melechesh would be overawed by the task of trying to repeat the trick but by taking their time in the release of "Enki" the consummate detail that has defined their career remains in abundance. There is so much that pleases me about the works of Ashmedi & co but high amongst those is the layering and sophisticated usage of ethnic instrumentation which never descends into the pervading mindset of most folk(-orientated) metal bands for whom a brief synth blast of pre-processed sounds is as
